Our service works in collaboration with the Norfolk and Norwich, James Paget and Queen Elizabeth Hospitals to support their Lower Gastrointestinal teams.
When patients are referred to these departments they are required to do a faecal immunochemical test (FIT). If this test comes back negative it is extremely unlikely this patient will have bowel cancer. Patients who have a negative FIT are redirected to the Lower GI Support Service.
Patients may be asked to complete a blood test, stool test or repeat FIT to help with investigations and once these are back, an appointment will be made with one of our GPs. The appointments are remote and can take up to 45 minutes to ensure our GPs get a detailed patient history and description of their symptoms.
The service was brought into place to reduce waiting time for suspected cancer patients and increase diagnosis rates of patients who do not have cancer.
The Lower GI Support Service is run by GPs, Nurses and Admin staff employed by NPC.
The service is remotely managed, but patients may be asked to have a blood test/drop stool samples off their registered GP surgery.
Our Clinical team work Monday-Thursday 9:00-17:00 and our Admin team work 8:30-16:30.
Your GP will refer you to a hospital of your choice if they are concerned with gastrointestinal problems you present to them. If your FIT result is negative you will be redirected to our service.
